Conferencia:“Knowledge in Formation. A Computational Theory of Interpretation”, por Janos J. Sarbo.

Lugar:     Salón de Actos del Agrupación Politécnica

Fecha:     Jueves 27  de octubre

Horario:   De 10 a 12 horas

ABSTRACT:

The promise of Artificial Intelligence research that the computer will become, in matters of information processing, an equal partner of man has not been realized so far. The bottleneck is the used knowledge representation that cannot deal with the adroitness of the human mind. In this talk I will introduce a model for knowledge representation that is cognitively based, grounded in semiotics and applicable to human and artificial information processing alike. By virtue of the fundamental character of cognition and interpretation, the model can be applied uniformly to knowledge modeling in different domains. An advantage of uniform representation is that knowledge from different domains can be merged in a single form by means of structural coordination. Experimental evidence from neuro-physiological research shows that human information processing may work according to the same principle.

BIO:

Dr. Janos Sarbo received his Ph.D degree in electrical engineering at the Technical University of Budapest, Hungary, in 1985. Since 1986 he is working at Radboud University Nijmegen (RU), Dept. Computer Science, The Netherlands.

In the past his research activity was centered around compiler construction and natural language parsing. Later he shifted his interest to knowledge representation. In the beginning he was engaged in a research on formal conceptual analysis (also known as concept lattice theory). Recently his focus is on the definition of a model of knowledge representation on the basis of a theory of cognitive activity and a theory of signs (semiotics). In this project (See website https://www.cs.ru.nl/kif for further detail) he is working together with J.I. Farkas and A.J.J. van Breemen.

The foundations of the so-called Knowledge in Formation (KiF) project have been published in a complete book: "Knowledge in Formation: A Computational Theory of Interpretation", edited by Springer and released in 2011.

Besides, Dr. Janos Sarbo plays the role of Erasmus Coordinator in his Faculty, and since year 2005/2006 there exists an Erasmus exchange agreement between RU Faculty of Science and our Faculty of Computer Science Engineering in Albacete, UCLM.
