Abstract: The talk will be focused on selected topics of large-scale wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs). It will consist of three parts. In the first one, localization algorithms and routing protocols suitable for large WSNs will be discussed. A technique based on antenna arrays and angle-of-arrival (AoA) measurements will be described. While the AoA algorithms are rarely considered for WSNs due to the large dimensions of directional antennas, some system configurations will be investigated that can be easily incorporated in pocket-size wireless devices. Then, routing protocols based on the geographic data will be considered as a viable approach to construct a robust, scalable and energy efficient algorithm. The second part will deal with environmental applications of large WSANs. Two examples will be given, regarding animal tracking and forest fire-fighting. In the former one, a network designed for tracking the Iberian lynxes in Donana National Park will be described. In the latter, a concept of a whole system detecting and fighting with forest fires will be presented. The talk will be concluded with the research ideas and open issues concerning scalability and self-organisation aspects of large-scale wireless sensor networks.
Dr. Pawel Kulakowski received his M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees from AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow in 2003 and 2007 respectively. In 2008, he was awarded a national sponsored scholarship andhe joined AIT group at Polytechnic University of Cartagena in Spain. In 2010, he was working six months as a visiting professor in BCDS group atUniversity of Girona. He serves as a reviewer of books and papers inseveral scientific journals and worldwide conferences, like IEEE Communications Magazine, Computer Communications or PIMRC. He received two conference Best Paper Awards. His research interests include localization algorithms, routing protocols and self-organization issues in distributedand collaborative wireless sensor networks Currently, Dr. Kulakowski performs a research post-doc stay at Albacete Research Institute of Informatics, University of Castilla-La Mancha.
